Biography

A private family service will be held for MAJ (Retired) Angelo Venniro, 75, Lawton.
Major Venniro died peacefully Friday, May 1, 2015 in Lawton.

Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.

He was born to Frank and Maria Venniro on February 24, 1940 in Caltanissetta, Sicily, Italy. At the age of 10, he and his family immigrated to Toronto, Canada where they lived for two years awaiting legal authorization to enter the United States. The family settled in Rochester, New York where Angelo attended schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1959. While stationed with the Army in Augsburg, Germany, he married Ellen H. Dirrigl. At the time of his death, the couple had been married for 53 years. He had several other duty stations before coming to Ft. Sill, where he became an American citizen in 1965. While still in the military, he pursued higher education. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Cameron University and a Masters degree from the University of Oklahoma. During his Army career, he received numerous awards and decorations, including the ancient order of St. Barbara. He retired from the Army in 1979, after 20 years of service. He worked another 21 years at Ft. Sill with civil service where he was chief of protocol for 15 years. After his final retirement in 2001, Mr. Venniro engaged in charitable works, pursued his favorite pastimes, traveling and enjoying his hobby as a model railroad enthusiast.

Survivors include his wife Ellen, his daughter Helen, his grandson Joshua Leach and his wife Amanda, and great granddaughter Elizabeth. He is also survived by five siblings and many nieces and nephews.

The family requests that those who would like to remember Angelo make a charitable contribution in his name to the Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City.

“Say not in grief he is no more – but live in thankfulness that was”. He will be missed.
