VVA PRESIDENT PRAISES HOUSE BILL TO END HOMELESSNESS
The following statement was issued today by Veterans of Vietnam War
(VVA) President George C. Duggins commenting on Congressman Lane Evans
(D-ILL) introduction yesterday of a bill (HR 936) designed to end
homelessness among America’s veterans within a decade.
“Americans everywhere should salute Congressman Lane Evans for his
leadership in introducing the Heather French Henry Comprehensive
Homeless Veterans Act of 2001.
VVA thanks Ms. Heather French, who served as Miss America 2000, for her
tenacious and extraordinary efforts on behalf of justice for all
veterans, but particularly for her efforts on behalf of homeless
veterans. It is appropriate that this proposed Act be named after her,
as her father is a disabled Vietnam veteran, who is an active member of
This Act will provide a ‘holistic’ and comprehensive approach to help
homeless veterans get off the streets, surmount their problems, secure
permanent housing, and obtain and sustain meaningful employment.
VVA also thanks and salutes Senator Paul Wellston (D-Mn..) for his
intention to introduce the same bill in the Senate. VVA favors quick
action and passage of this bill so the President can sign it into law
before Memorial Day 2001.
Our National Organization, most of our VVA State Councils and many of
our local Chapters have actively been assisting homeless veterans for
twenty years. And, we have an ongoing Task Force on Homeless Veterans
that reports regularly to our VVA Leadership.”
