With four major aircraft systems under scrutiny, the Marine
Corps found itself uncomfortably close to the harsh
spotlight on defense emerging in the 2000 presidential
campaign. While neither Democratic presidential nominee
Al Gore nor Republican nominee George W. Bush have spoken
publicly on the helicopter groundings, several independent
defense experts this week termed the Marine Corps problem
symbolic of eroding U.S. military capability.
