The Ballad of Willie Doe

Copyright 1995 - Will Pete

Got sick on the job one day. Rushed to the VA hospital in an ambulance, had my gall bladder removed and went back to work to find someone else doing my job. I asked the boss why I didn't have a job, his answer..."Willie.....I don't know". This is a song for "kids" and other young people.

SOCIETY HAS RUN AWAY FROM THE PEOPLE OF THIS LAND

A RULE FOR THIS A LAW FOR THAT THE MORAL DOES NOT STAND

THE KID LOOKED UP TO ADULTS AND ASKED WHERE CAN I GO

TO LIVE A LIFE OF HAPPINESS, THEY SAID WILLIE I DON'T KNOW

HE SEARCHED IN SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES, THEY PUT ON QUITE A SHOW

SO LOST IN BOOKS AND OFFICES, HE HEARD WILLIE I DON'T KNOW

THE RULES AND LAWS SAID FREEDOM IN A COUNTRY OF THE FREE

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT SO WHY COMPLAIN, DUE PROCESS IS GUARANTEED

DEEP DOWN INSIDE A SADNESS BURNED, BONDAGE SEEMED TO GROW

HE ASKED THE COURTS AND THE GOVERNMENT, HE HAD TO DO IT ALL ALONE

HIS FRIENDS HAD TURNED TO HIM FOR HELP, HE HUNG HIS HEAD DOWN LOW

THE ANSWER THAT HE MIMICKED, WELL ITS GETTIN KIND OF OLD

THESE WORDS HAD ECHOED OFF THE WALLS OF UNEMPLOYMENT LINES

PEOPLE ONLY LISTENED FOR THEIR PAY, TO HEAR THEY HAD NO TIME

FAR BEHIND THE PAGES OF THE DAILY NEWS, THERES A REALITY OF WOE

OF DRUGS AND BOOZE AND POVERTY, AS WILLIE TRULY KNOWS

WITH MULTIPLE AFFLICTIONS, IN A DAZE OF STATUS QUO

IN THE COLD HOT STREETS HE WAS FREE TO DIE, OH WILLIE DID YOU KNOW

THIS STORY THAT I TELL YOU COMES FROM WILLIE'S BROTHER JOHN

AS HE CARVED A HEADSTONE POEM, FROM DRIFTWOOD HE FOUND ON A POND

SOCIETY HAS RUN AWAY, HERE LIES WILLIE DOE

ARE YOU FREE AT LAST PLEASE TELL US, CAUSE WILLIE WE DON'T KNOW

OH WILLIE, WILLIE TELL US, THE BONDAGE SEEMS TO GROW

AS THE ECHOES IN THE COLD HOT STREETS WHISPER WILLIE OHhhhhhh Noooooo
